Boiler servicing & repair is my niche. It's what I find challenging.
Inspecting, diagnosing & repairing faults in boilers & central heating systems in my local area is what I do.
Every now & again, an unusual or vintage boiler appears...
The Potterton Flamingo 20 - 30
What a beauty.
There is no denying the impressive heft of all of that cast iron. This unit was built to last and, indeed, it's been in this building providing some level of central heating and hot water service for around 40 years!
Carbon Monoxide alarm
My customer had called because his carbon monoxide alarm had been activated and, quite sensibly, he had turned off the boiler & sought assistance. On arrival, I ignited the boiler & could already see that the pilot light was burning unusually fiercely.
The inside cover of the boiler looked like this -
Quite clearly, you can see the soot deposits around the edges.
In the trade, we refer to soot as PIC (Particles of Imcomplete Combustion). Sooty deposits are evidence of an inefficient boiler and PICs are hazardous to health.
I investigated further and it was pretty obvious that, owing to various additional concerns in the set-up, the most economic way forward would be a boiler replacement.
While I will always seek to find the most sensible and efficient solution to a boiler-related problem, I recognise that it's important to give honest advice. If a repair is not cost-effective or likely to be worthwhile in the medium-term, I will always let my customer know.
Let me finish by reminding you, as I always do, that annual boiler servicing is a must if you want to avoid problems further down the line.
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
